10 Important Reasons Why You Should ONLY Buy an I.K.C. Registered Puppy

1. The puppy must have been bred within a strict code of ethics.

2. The Pedigree will have been validated by the I.K.C. (records go back to the foundation of the State)

3. The puppy will be microchipped and so if it is lost or stolen, it can be traced and returned to you.

4. If your puppy is microchipped it will also have been seen by a Veterinary Surgeon.(Ask yourself, why would a reputable breeder object to that?)

5. Should you  wish to show your puppy either here or abroad this will not be a problem. (the I.K.C. run
over a hundred events of different kinds throughout the country all year 'round.  Its great fun!)

6. Should you in the fullness of time wish to breed from your by now older dog, the resulting puppies can
be registered with the I.K.C., because the parents are.

7.  The I.K.C. is a full member of a world wide organisation and so its registrations are recognised world-wide.

8.  Getting a pet passport to bring your dog on holiday with you will be much easier as it will already have a microchip.

9.  The Veterinary Association VICAS support the I.K.C. in promoting responsible dog ownership.

10. Any I.K.C. Member found guilty of cruelty to dogs, is banned for life.

The Irish Kennel Club has invited Clubs to apply for a Change of Date for their 2009 Club Show or to hold a Second Club Show, in order to celebrate the Euro Winners Show coming to Dublin. The Scottish Terrier Club of Ireland has applied for a second set of Green Stars. Further information will follow.

Euro Winners Show Dublin 2009.

July 2007 Dublin City Council are implementing a ban on certain breeds of dog i.e. Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bill Terrier, Dobermann Pinscher, German Shepherd Dog (Alsation), Akita, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Rottweiler, Bullmastiff, owned by tenants of Dublin City Council properties.     Statistics have shown that breed specific legislation is not an adequate tool to deal with dog attacks, the focus should be on the owners and not the breed of dog. The people who will suffer most from this draconian move by the Dublin City Council will be innocent dog owners and their much loved dogs. The IKC are having meetings with the relevant Breed Clubs and Statutory bodies.  If you wish to add your voice against this decision please sign the petition at.

On Tuesday, May 29, 2007 The IKC made the following Statement.

Exhibitors wishing to compete in Ireland with dogs already registered with a Kennel Club that is a member of the F.C.I. do not have to register with the Irish Kennel Club. The registration certificates of fellow members of the F.C.I. are acceptable.
Please note that for dogs not registered with the Irish Kennel Club a copy of the dog's Registration documents, Championship titles and Working Class Certificates (WCC), issued by the National Kennel Club of the country in which the dog is registered, must accompany the entry form for the Show. If no such certificate is submitted the dog will be not be entered for the Show.

On Friday, 3rd November, the delegates of the IKC agreed to a change to the Green Star system which has been in operation since January 1978.

The new system will come into operation from January 2007 and will be subject to review in 2009.

The current points system will be replaced with a simple numerical calculation of seven green stars won under seven different judges. To ensure a smooth transition from old to new, a conversion will be applied from points already gained under the old system.

Points won under the old system will be converted as follows –

1 - 5 points counts as 1 Green Star
6 – 11 points counts as 2 Green Stars
12 – 18 points counts as 3 Green Stars
19 – 24 points counts as 4 Green Stars
25 – 31 points counts as 5 Green Stars
32 points or more count as 6 Green Stars

Grading will also be introduced at all Championship shows and only those dogs graded Excellent (or in the case of puppies-Very Promising) will be allowed to compete for the green star. There would be a stipulation that 1 Green Star must be won after the age of 15 months. Champions will also be eligible to compete for the green star.

There will no longer be any enhancement for Group wins.

The title of Annual Champion in each breed will be awarded to the dog with the highest number of Green Stars won in the calendar year. In the event of a tie, the award will be made to the dog with the greater number of Best of Breed wins.

These changes come on the back of the decision to implement 10 groups at all Championship shows from June 2007; these will mirror the FCI groupings and will see some breeds move from their traditional home, eg. Dalmatians into Group 6 along with Beagles and Bassets, an influx into Group 5 of the Pomeranian, Siberian Husky and Samoyed and other Nordic and Spitz breeds, the merging of the Toys and remaining Utility breeds into the Companion Group 9 and the prospect of the Miniature Schnauzer and the Affenpinscher taking on the mighty St Bernard in Group 2. Dachshund will have their own group, Group 4 and the Gundogs will be split into Groups 7 and 8.

The IKC announced on Friday 16 June 2006 that they had won a bid to host
